Objective: Reflect on effective interaction techniques

Time: <1 hours

Grade: Complete/Not

Instructions:

For this reflection, consider either a course you've taught or a course you've taken in the past. (You can even consider this "course" for the exercise). Think about the three kinds of interaction you experienced:

  • Passive Interactions are places in the course where students will get automatic feedback from content. This would include automatically graded quizzes or self-check assignments (scoring themselves against a rubric, for instance, or completing an outside homework assignment or practice).
  • Active Interactions include activities or assessments that require one-on-one or pre-set interaction with others. This would include interaction that is tied to synchronous online meetings (needing to ask a question or be in a breakout group), assessments requiring feedback, discussions held either in-person or on asynchronous forums, or similar activities.
  • Feedback Interactions are when students can expect to receive formal (graded) or informal (comments, critique) feedback from an instructor or their peers. This could be from a gradebook entry, an email, a message, or a conference meeting.
When have you found these kinds of interaction most valuable, in your experience as an instructor or as a student? As you look toward the future, what ideas do you have about including each type of interaction in your own courses?

Please reflect on this in a short written piece or an audio or video recording, and upload it here when you're done.

Tip: Don't spend too much time worrying about the differences between "active" and "passive" interaction; it's a delineation that may be helpful for thinking about, or it may not. Focus on how specific tools or finding content you need now. Identifying a gap is just as important as filling it for this exercise. Let me know if you need help!

How will I know when I've completed this?

After you've submitted your assignment, you'll get feedback from me. Look for feedback in the Moodle Gradebook or on this assignment page within a few business days after submitting.
